Hey there, book nerds! I’m Roseanne A. Brown, and I’m so excited to tell you all about the astrology system in my fantasy novel A Song of Wraiths and Ruin! ASOWAR is set in a world inspired by West African folklore, and one of the major elements is that the day of the week on which a character is born decides who their patron deity is and what kind of magic they can do.
I got my inspiration for this magic system from a cultural tradition among the Akan people of Ghana, my mother’s tribe, where children are often given a name based on the day of the week on which they’re born. You can learn more about the Akan day name system here.
Since I’m a huge astrology nerd myself (I’m talking “probably following more astrology apps than should be considered legal” level huge here), I had a lot of fun defining the astrology in my book to create horoscopes that applied not only to the characters but to the real world as well.
A Song of Wraiths and Ruin is a book full of dark magic and even darker fates, so once you’ve gathered your courage and your trustiest sword, scroll below to the date of the week on which you were born to see what the gods have in store for you!
Monday: Sun Day. Patron Deity: Gyata the Lion. Alignment: Sun.
You were born on Sun Day and your patron deity is Gyata the Lion. As a Sun-Aligned person, your specialty is light magic. The Sun-Aligned are natural leaders, and you can often be found in positions of authority that allow you to utilize your natural people-rallying skills. But remember it’s alright to step back and let others lead from time to time, burdens are more easily carried when shared among the many.
You have a big week ahead of you, Sun-Aligned folks! A strong gut intuition will lead you down a path never taken before, mostly because neither the path nor the forest you’ll wander into technically exist. Be careful of any crossroads you come to, for the price may be higher than you’re willing to pay, and the all-knowing sentries who guard the path always collect their due. Believe in yourself! … for there are dark forces out there who believe in you, and they are on their way. Prepare yourself accordingly.
Tuesday: Moon Day. Patron Deity: Patuo the Owl. Alignment: Moon.
You were born on Moon Day and your patron deity is Patuo the Owl. As a Moon-Aligned person, your specialty is healing magic. Moon-Aligned people are naturally inquisitive, and you are likely happiest when acquiring knowledge or mastering a new skill. But remember to step outside your own head now and again to remember there’s a whole world that cares as much about you as it does what you know!
You might find yourself forgetting something important this week, Moon-Aligned friends, but don’t fret! The strange cloaked woman who lives beneath your floorboards and only speaks in ancient riddles is happy to help you remember. Gosh, isn’t that sweet of her? Consider writing her a nice card, or baking a pie to thank her. Normally I’d suggest a good heart-to-heart, but truthfully, the whole “only speaking in ancient riddles” thing does make conversation a bit difficult. But one can never have too many friends, even if they may possibly be eerie specters.
Wednesday: Wind Day. Patron Deity: Santrofie the Nightjar. Alignment: Wind.
You were born on Wind Day and your patron deity is Santrofie the Nightjar. As a Wind-Aligned person, your specialty is air and weather magic. Wind-Aligned people are free spirits, and you move easily from place to place making friends wherever you go. Though your eyes are always trained on the next adventure, remember to check in from time to time on the people you met on your past ones. You left a deeper impression on them than you realize. (Fun fact, you share your Alignment with Karina, one of the protagonists of A Song of Wraiths and Ruin!)
An apple a day will keep the doctor away, but might I suggest you consider investing in purifying salt instead of apples? Also, obtaining a vial of holy oil wouldn’t be a bad idea either. Luckily, after your encounter with an unspeakable ancient horror that has not been seen on this plane of existence in a thousand years, the rest of your week is going to be pretty calm! But yeah, definitely invest in that holy oil. Just…trust me on this one.
Thursday: Earth Day. Patron Deity: Kotoko the Porcupine. Alignment: Earth.
You were born on Earth Day and your patron deity is Kotoko the Porcupine. As an Earth-Aligned person, your specialty is earth magic. You are a steady rock to those around you, providing a strong foundation in what is currently a tumultuous time. But you’re allowed to lean on others too, Earth-Aligned! Even the tallest of mountains surrounds itself with smaller peaks.
Old friends and new enemies will both be popping into your life…or wait, perhaps it’s new friends and old enemies? Either way, some combination of friends and enemies will be appearing, and it’ll be your job to figure out who is who. Make sure you categorize them correctly, because nothing ruins game night faster than casting a seven generation long curse on the wrong person! Also, try something new with your appearance, mostly for fun and also because a new appearance will be very useful on your next reconnaissance mission into an enemy prince’s stronghold.
Friday: Water Day. Patron Deity: Susono the Hippo. Alignment: Water.
You were born on Water Day and your patron deity is Susono the Hippo. As a Water-Aligned person, your specialty is water magic. Water-Aligned people tend to go with the flow, easily changing and adapting to meet whatever obstacle may stand in their way. However, remember that you are whatever you wish to be, and you never have to change your core identity to please anyone else.
Neither a borrower nor a lender be, mostly because your odds of coming across an enchanted treasure horde with a terrible past are far higher than zero. This is a good week to try something new, Water-Aligned friends! Except making a bargain with a cursed spirit king, it’s never a good week to do that. I mean, I can’t stop you, but it is pretty high on the list of things that aren’t exactly great ways to spend your weekend.
Saturday: Fire Day. Patron Deity: Ɔsebɔ the Leopard. Alignment: Fire.
You were born on Fire Day and your patron deity is Ɔsebɔ the Leopard. As a Fire-Aligned person, your specialty is fire magic. Fire-Aligned people are a force to be reckoned with, and you are no different! You fight passionately for what you believe in and you are the definition of a ride-or-die friend. But don’t forget that sometimes a gentle touch works just as well, if not better, than barreling into a problem.
Somewhere far from you there is a house. In this house there is a room. In that room there is a box. And in that box there is a secret. The secret has nothing to do with you….not yet, anyway. But just know it is out there somewhere, and it is waiting. And waiting. And waiting. In the meantime, distract yourself from the inevitable nature of destiny by listening to some of your favorite old albums! Take comfort in the familiar and let the unknown be the unknown for a little longer. It’s going to come either way, so why rush?
Sunday: Life Day. Patron Deity: Adanko the hare. Alignment: Life
You were born on Life Day and your patron deity is Adanko the Hare. As a Life-Aligned person, your talents lean toward perception and manipulation magic. Much like their patron deity, Life-Aligned people are quiet and perceptive. You tend to listen more often than you speak, with a strong natural ability to tune into the emotions and needs of others. But you deserve to be in the spotlight too, and you shouldn’t be afraid to raise your voice and say what you need to say. (Fun fact, you share your Alignment with Malik, one of the protagonists of A Song of Wraiths and Ruin!)
I would tell you not to descend into any strange, endless labyrinths you may come across this week, but hey, what is life without a little adventure? Make sure you prepare for your journey well with whatever magic you’ve mastered, spears and bows you’ve enchanted, and of course, water and sunscreen! The choice that looks easiest rarely is while the choice that looks hardest rarely isn’t. Be sure of heart and quick of foot, and even an ever evolving labyrinth with no end won’t be able to get you down!
And that’s all seven! Do you feel your Alignment is accurate? Let us know in the comments below!
